A Special Medallion!

Dr. Jensi Souders, Tennessee
Recipient, 2014 International
Achievement Award

Dr. Jensi Souders, Tennessee, received the International Achievement Award at the International Convention in Indianapolis, at the Celebration Luncheon on July 30, 2014.The gold medallion she received was first presented in 1953 to Eunah Temple Holden, Florida. She wore it until her death in 1975, and in 1987 it was then presented to Dr. Jessie Sim. Prior to Sim's death, the medallion was returned to Florida for safe keeping.  In May 2014, the medallion was sent to Society Headquarters to Dr. Beverly Helms, 2012-2014 international president. A new gold bar was added to the middle which now bears Dr. Souders' name.

Dr. Jensi Souders has served the Society for many years in numerous chapter, state,  and international leadership positions. She was the 2010-2012 International President, and served on the 2012-2014 Administrative Board as immediate past president, chair of the DKG Supporting Corporation, chair of Transition Planning for the nominee for international president, and chair of the Administrative Board's committee to review regional conferences. She also served as a member of the 2012-2014 performance appraisal team.

Unique and Specific

Pat Smith, Delta Beta Chapter in Florida, shared her ideas for strengthening the Society.

"1. We as an organization have to offer something that no other organization can. Otherwise, we continue to be repetitive and redundant. In other words, we MUST be set apart and unique.

2. We need to meet the specific needs of our young members as they are our future. In order to do this, they will have to share their needs.

I never heard of Delta Kappa Gamma until 2 years before I retired. I came into the organization to find stimulating higher level conversation concerning important issues in education. In retirement, I thought that would be sorely lacking.

Instead, I found a sisterhood of wonderful individuals and new, strong friendships. Maybe that was what I needed more than a 'brain boost'."

Does DKG have a Learning Disabilty?

Dr. Gwen Simmons, North Carolina, shared a couple of thoughts with me in response to my request for ideas for strengthening DKG. Below is one of them.

"Does DKG NOW have a learning disability?  Yes, I think it does.

Before the time of Peter M. Senge (1990) and Ronald A. Heifetz (1994), Dr. Blanton (1929) structured DKG to be a Learning Organization; that is, an organization where members are expected to participate in the activities of the Society; although DKG may not be transformed by a member’s participation but the member is transformed into a leader in her own right.

I have never minded what a colleague calls the “grunt work” of DKG because when I understood that any responsibility you assumed in DKG you would” learn on the job” and the DKG Organization would probably not be transformed by your grunt work , but you, as an adult learner, would continue to learn and hence, be transformed.

DKG, as educators often do, has an overall mentality that something must be produced that is tangible—when in reality what would really transform this organization is women thinking on their feet and being able to listen, disagree without taking disagreement to mean rejection and creating an “us against them mentality” (If you don’t think like me, there must be something wrong with you because there is certainly nothing wrong with me.)"

Participation transforms members!

Dr. Gwen Simmons, North Carolina, responded to my question, "What is the one thing you believe will make the most difference in our organization to maintain its viability into the 22nd century?"

Simmons writes, "The answer to your request is more complex than one thing but given all the movement in a positive direction in the last three or four biennia, I think a key one is a focus on the expectation of participation by active members in the activities of the Society: Constitution, Article III Membership. Section B.1: … “An active member shall participate in the activities of the Society.”

During the revision of the Constitution in 2009-10, proposals to strike that expectation from the Constitution were considered— I was adamant in my opposition because I believe that is the key aspect of DKG structure, i.e., participation transforms the member, and provides opportunities to transform the organization.  Active participation requires a member to think for herself (in situations filled with a diversity of perspectives) and she ultimately realizes that she is leader of sorts and has something to offer the organization (which provided her the opportunity to participate in something she was NOT prepared to do until she finished the 'task'.)"

Relationships Strengthen

In response to my request from members to share one idea for strengthening the Society, Karen Tinstman, Pennsylvania, submitted the following.

For a long time I have felt that relationships were one of the most important aspects to our Society.  Your articles have reinforced my premise. Of course, this is nothing new to our Society but I’m afraid that we need to be more intentional in developing this aspect of organization.

As Chapter President many years ago, each of our meetings started with a communication activity, so that by the end of the biennium each one would know more about 8 different members.   The premise was based on the notion that there are so many distractions that prevent members from attending. Perhaps a strong relationship with several members would be enough to say, “I don’t want to miss our meeting because I would miss seeing everyone.” In addition, knowing someone cared whether they came to the meeting or not might make all the difference.

There are many activities that can help foster good relationships. One thing seems clear; we can find ‘common ground’ in everyone and use that to develop a relationship. As a member of the Membership Committee in Pennsylvania, your articles have encouraged us to challenge our chapters to see the benefits of this idea.  It is interesting to me that our church has recently been on the same bandwagon. Just last week, our pastor used the catch phrase 'No Know, No Grow.'

So in answer to your question, “What is one thing you believe will make the most difference in our organization to maintain our viability into the 22nd century?” In my opinion,  RELATIONSHIPS."

Change the Name?

The following idea was received following the deadline for my article in the July/August 2014 issue of DKG NEWS. The author, Jane Williams, a past state organization president from Virginia, gave me permission to use it on my blog.
"I believe changing the name of the Society will do more to carry us into the 22nd Century than any of the “Band aids” that I have heard so far for improving/retaining membership and leadership.   We know that the majority of our members are now middle aged and older, and the dialogue is plentiful about attracting younger members--but not to much avail.  I have felt for several years that our Greek name still says “sorority” to those who hear it, read it, and see it.  Even seasoned members, regardless of “training,” can be heard referring to DKG as a “sorority.”  (Using the letters “DKG” doesn’t seem to have had much impact either).
To retain/attain the impression of a professional leadership organization, I believe Delta Kappa Gamma needs to rename itself as the “International Society of Women Educators” (ISWE), “Society of Women Educators, International” (SWEI), “International Association of Women Educators”(IAWE), or some wording that will immediately give a hint as to “what we’re about.”  I believe we need this updated “first impression” to bring new life to our chapters.
I do not see that any great expense or rush to make changes in the Society name as currently printed would have to be incurred.  For a period of time, we could qualify letterhead communications with a line “Formerly The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International” and allow our pre-printed forms to 'play out.'  The DKG rose logo could stay, if desired.  The artifacts, documents, and mementos of our rich history will always be with us to serve as a reminder of our founders and our continued mission and purposes.
I believe Annie Webb Blanton would be pleased to know that we would take this action.  In her own words:  Be progressive.  Keep up with the moving world while not discarding what in the old has value.  Don’t cling to the old when its worth has passed."

CBS recognizes Arizona

Lori Good, Arizona's chair of the Communications and Publicity Committee, submitted the recent visibility provided to DKG by a CBS television station.

Kim Covington, DKG Media Award Recipient.
"The winner of our 2014 Media Award was Kim Covington, KPNX Channel12 weekend evening anchor. She also is the lead reporter for the station's education franchise, School Solutions.
When I notified Kim about being our award winner, she had just returned to Channel 12 after seven months recovering from an on-the-job vehicle accident.  When we applauded her as our Media Award Winner we also applauded her for her first day back as the Channel 12 Weekend Evening Anchor.

As Arizona state organization's  Communication and Publicity Chair I had the privilege to introduce Omicron State’s 2014 Media Award at the convention.  CBS Channel 12 was there filming my introduction of Kim receiving the award and her acceptance speech.  That evening we had a spot on the 6:00 & 10:00 news.

Kim and CBS Channel 12 also posted pictures on their Facebook pages and websites.  Kim posted: Teared up when I was given the DKG Society International Media Award today for education coverage. What a wonderful group of women.

I am a true believer in communication & publicity.  We have a state organization newsletter, state website and mass mailing lists but publicity is something I will continue to work on.  Hopefully, I was able to help get the DKG name a little boost! "

Modern Day Slavery

Dr. Ellen Kennedy,
 CEO, World without Genocide

Human trafficking is one of the world’s fastest-growing criminal activities, second only to trafficking in drugs.  In the US, one in seven young people between the ages of 10 and 18 will run away from home at some point.  Within 48 hours, at least a third of them will be sex-trafficked and forced into prostitution by perpetrators who prey on vulnerable young women and young men.
Educators are on the front lines in this struggle to protect our youth.  At the 2014 DKG international convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, you can learn how to protect young people, help prosecutors, and educate  communities to end today’s modern-day slavery.
Dr. Kennedy has produced a DVD that will be available to be used with high school students as performers and audiences.  The play is done on a bare stage, readers' theatre style, with a simple script and accompanying PowerPoint slides.

Join this dynamic speaker as she helps you come face to face with one form of modern day slavery.

One Spark Ignites a Fire!

Rachel Wear, (left) Arizona State Organization President, installs
daughter, Darby Downs as president of Alpha Rho Chapter.
Darby Downs will have her baby July 2, 2014. Her mother, Rachel Wear is the state organization president of Arizona.

In an email to Heidi Chadwick, Southwest Regional Director and the Society Rep to Arizona, Rachel shared, "We are all getting excited.  It is going to be a girl. I recently had the privilege of installing Darby as Alpha Rho (our chapter) president, at our chapter May Breakfast. It made me cry, and then to think that the little angel inside her tummy could one day be a DKG member and be installed by her mother - what a dreamer I am, huh? "

Wear went on to say, "We installed new officers at that meeting -  five out of seven are young active educators.  How cool is that?  Darby can get a great deal of credit for this happening.  See, as we all keep saying,  it just takes that one spark to ignite the fire in these chapters."

Listen to Leroy!

Leroy, the Leadership Guy
Margaret Church, North Carolina, is a faithful follower of our tweets, blogs, emails, newsletters, etc. She  submitted the following for posting on my blog.

"In my chapter, and as part of the state organization leadership committee, we provide leadership tips through a third person, Leroy, the Leadership Guy.  At our upcoming state convention, Leroy will be there with various sayings provided by members of the leadership committee.  On the back side of his sign will be a QR code that will take you to his website that has been created by chapter president, Sherry Willis.  The website address is www.leroytheleadershipguy.weebly.com

He has some painted on clothes but also some clothes a member of my church made for him. Leroy will not only add some humor but his tips will make people stop and think   “I can’t do everything but I can do one thing.”

We purchased the rights for this character from Shutterstock to ensure that we did not violate any copyright laws. I may post it 250,000 times with my license and I am happy to post it via your blog."

Pat Taylor, North Carolina State Organization President, reported, "The impact of Leroy the Leadership Guy, a brainchild of our own Margaret Church and the Eta State Leadership Development Committee, has been creative and refreshing in helping members to take a look at the many facets of leadership through the eyes of "Leroy." The quotes and advice from this little guy have been shared in state and chapter newsletters as well in my presentations throughout the state.  Eta State is very proud of this positive and unique way the Eta State Leadership Development Committee has implemented to encourage the growth of state and local leaders."

Davis - Maintaining Viability

Dr. Vicki T. Davis
In the May/June 2014 issue of the DKG NEWS, I asked members to share their ideas as to the one thing they believe would make the most difference in our organization and maintain our viability into the next century. I have received numerous responses even though many members have not yet received their print copy. The responses will be the content of my last article as international president and the subject of many of my future blogs.

Below is the suggestion from Dr. Vicki Davis, Chair, International Golden Gift Fund Committee. She has held numerous offices at the chapter, state and international levels. She was the Texas State Organization President in 2009-2011. Recently, she was elected to a six year term on the Eunah Temple Holden Leadership Fund Committee.

"The one thing that will make DKG viable in the 22nd century is our ability to simplify our processes and procedures. Sometimes called voluntary simplicity, members will evaluate using data and prune with the heart. Adherence to this principle will re-shape the whole, accelerate new growth and cultivate opportunities to bloom perennially without denying our own patterns."

Touching lives for 100 years!

Nellie Rea Gordon, right, with Wanda Roe,
at the Southeast Regional Conference
in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1985.
Wanda was outgoing and Nellie was
 the incoming state organization president.
Anna Gordon Burns wrote the following about her mother, Nellie Rea Gordon, a current DKG member in Georgia, and a past state organization president in Arkansas.

In finding two letters  from students of her mom, Burns shared,  "One letter was from a student in her Latin I and then Spanish I class in the mid 70s. She wrote that when asked to prepare a speech presenting an award in a post-secondary class, her speech presented “the Teacher of the Year Award at Prescott High School” to mother because of the impact she had on her life.

The second letter was from a former student-turned-fellow teacher who said, “You dear lady, have been a great inspiration to my life...As a fellow teacher, your acceptance of me as an equal was humbling, and your praise of me and your encouragement provided much needed confidence for some difficult times. Your enthusiasm for teaching and zest for life itself was always contagious. Speaking from my heart, whenever I hear the word, ‘teacher’ you come to my mind. You are one of the reasons I became a teacher.”

In her 100 years Nellie Rea Gordon taught and touched numerous lives.  Both Nellie and her sister,  Addie Belle Sledge Harper, were teachers and members of DKG. Addie Belle served as Alabama state organization president (1973-1975), and in 1985, Nellie served Arkansas as its state organization president.

Nellie is now a member of Upsilon Chapter in Georgia, and celebrated her 100th birthday on May 18, 2014.

Human Trafficking Deplorable

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International supports the return of the Nigerian girls.

Education is extremely important. Human Trafficking is deplorable and criminal.

Marika Heimbach, Europe Regional Director,Germany,
Viktoria Bedareva, Russia, and Urve Laanemets, Estonia DKG Vice President.

Prompted by Carol Hughes, Illinois, three educators from Novgorod, Russia were invited by Anu Ariste, state organization president of Estonia, to join the members from Estonia at the annual DKG state organization convention in Tallinn.

One of the educators, Alla Lyutikova, wrote to Carol, and with enthusiasm and appreciation, described the opportunity to be involved  with the Delta Kappa Gamma Society Conference!  They learned much and met many "key women educators."  The members of Estonia made them feel "just at home."

Alla Lyutikova wrote, " The Conference was a success! Of Course I'm not a judge but I enjoyed the company of amiable, clever professional educators! The Conference was so well-organized, so thoroughly thought through, interesting, informative, at times, entertaining. We enjoyed such a good care that we felt ourselves just at home!"

Member's son lauds chapter!

Upsilon Chapter, New Mexico - making a positive impression.

Pauline Keene's son has read the DKG NEWS for a number of years, and for two reasons. One, his mother is a charter member of Upsilon Chapter of New Mexico state organization, and has always been extremely proud of her membership, and two, his mother was a first grade teacher who instilled in her children a voracious appetite for reading so he read almost everything he could get his hands on. His mother is 99 years old and suffers from severe dementia.

In an email Robert stated, "I have received a much deeper appreciation of both her life and the members of Upsilon Chapter.  As she got older and less able to attend meetings, these ladies have continued to send cards, bring flowers and gifts, and provide some cheer on almost every holiday. It is very much appreciated.  Mom has reached a stage where she is no longer able to understand much, but a few things still bring a faint little smile to her face and one of them is when I mention DKG.

One of the things I like about Upsilon Chapter in New Mexico is that each year they provide mom with their notebook of activities, events, etc.  They make sure to communicate what is happening in the organization to every member, rather than making the only communication, that a member who can't attend the meetings receives each year, is their dues notice.  Every member is entitled to be informed, even if they don't attend regularly."

Ubiquitous Member loves DKG

Sammie Saulsbury,Chapter President
 Alpha Eta in Tyler Texas
Sammie Saulsbury has  been a member of at least six DKG chapters. Shortly after having taught five years, Saulsbury was initiated into Zeta Kappa Chapter in Odessa, Texas.  Subsequent moves allowed her to enjoy membership in chapters in  Lubbock, Texas; Louisville, Kentucky;  two chapters in the Chicago, Illinois area; a chapter in Monroe, Louisiana; and now, her chapter, Alpha Eta, in Tyler, Texas.

Sammie served as president in both chapters in Illinois, and in  Alpha Nu more than once.  She served on state committees and as a state officer in Illinois, and on several state organization committees in Louisiana.  She is currently chapter president of Alpha Eta in Texas.

Saulsbury says, "What a blessing Delta Kappa Gamma has been for me!  One of the best things about the many moves that I made throughout my educational career was knowing that as soon as I relocated with my husband, job or no job, Delta Kappa Gamma chapters would contact me immediately.  The DKG love and friendships were assured."

Blast Email - Huge Success

The first email sent directly to DKG members on Friday, April 25-26, 2014, was very successful.

Even though some members received the email in their Spam boxes, others at old addresses, and many bounced, 75% of the members with email addresses in the Society database received the communication.

Much was learned, obstacles will be overcome, and now, members will be able to receive international information directly and instantly.

Up front seating for opening night, Monday, July 28, in Indianapolis, has been reserved for 25-40 members who responded to the email.

Chapter presidents, please make sure your members' email addresses are correct in the Society database. Ask a member to update the email addresses for all, so that all members receive the communications.

Why Women's Studies?

Tina McLaughlin presenting her workshop on
Women's Studies in Meredith, New Hampshire.
Tina McLaughlin, a teacher of Women's Studies in New Hampshire, uses media to expose the practice of marginalizing women. She presented a workshop in which she shared many activities used with her students to teach the need to empower girls and women.

One example is the "Equal Pay Bake Sales" where cup cakes are sold to girls for 77 cents and the same cupcake is sold to boys for $1.00.  The message of unequal pay, based on gender, is conveyed immediately.

One of the YouTube videos she presented was "How the Media Failed Women in 2013." Check it out. It is part of  The Representation Project.

Congress Considers

There are currently several hundred bills under consideration in this session of the U.S. Congress that address human trafficking in some way. The majority of these bills address sexual exploitation of trafficked victims particularly those under the age of 18.

The Violence Against Women Act is aimed at punishing those who prey upon women. A number of organizations seek to address the situation. Some of these groups are Operation Polaris which is mainly aimed at education of the public about the insidious ways in which trafficking affects victims.

FAIR Girls takes a multipronged approach by sponsoring educational workshops on the subject and also providing services to victims in the U.S and other countries. One of these services provides occupational therapy and counseling to victims.  Jewelry made by victims is for sale to the public and is available through http://fairgirls.earthcare.com/. Part of the money raised through sale of jewelry is used to finance counseling for victims.

Get involved. Become an advocate for women, children, and excellence in education!

KUDOS to British Columbia

Sheila Pierce, provincial president of British Columbia,  revealed her heart when reporting her pride in the accomplishment of the members in BC.
"I am very proud of BC, DKG members. Although we are a small group we are commited and productive. Our recent survey showed that 97% of members had enjoyed Chapter meetings, activities, speakers and fellowship, and 87% are satisfied in the direction DKG is moving.
Members frequently comment on the support and encouragement they get from fellow members. We have excellent programs and speakers. We have provided scholarships, raised funds for local women and children's charities, supported the Canadian Hamambee Education Society which educates girls in Kenya and Tanzania,  and the Tlamacazapa project in Mexico which supports education of children and women's literacy as well as helath education projects. We have surveyed members and developed a Provincial Action Plan focussed on renewal and revitalization. We have had good participation and attendance at regional conferences and international conventions.

Our members have served on international committees and participate through social networking with DKG members internationally. We joined members in Washington State for a meeting in 2013 and they will join us at our spring conference in April 2014. One of our goals is to work toward more unity of purpose among Canada members through a new Canadian project.

We feel we are moving forward with our revitalizaion and renewal and have initiated 7 new members since September 2013."

Missing Leaders?

I am amazed that a large number of state organization presidents report difficulty getting members at the chapter level to accept positions of leadership. Why?

While the discussion, as to the reasons for this, is uncomfortable; it is vital to the future of our Society.

What is the problem? Do members not see themselves as leaders? Do they feel that the duties and responsibilities are overwhelming?

Consider having a chapter dialogue to address possible reasons many are not willing to take on additional responsibilities. Be sure to include all the positives of assuming leadership roles in your discussion; increased personal and professional growth opportunities, enhanced skills in delegation, improved organizational ability, and many networking occasions across your state organization and the Society.

Might the  conversation also include the idea of simplifying the tasks, and sharing the load? This way all members can contribute to and accomplish the work of the chapter and the state organization.

Germany Cross of Merit

Left, Marika Heimbach, DKG European Regional Director,
presents Gitta Franke-Zoellmer a rose upon her receipt
of the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Gitta Franke-Zoellmer, one of the founders of the Germany DKG state organization and former state organization president, was recently awarded the Federal Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

She received  this prestigious award because of her longstanding commitment as leader of the VBE (Union for Education) and her work for equality for women on the national and European level.

She is a member of the European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE/EI), and serves as chairperson of the Status of Women Committee (ETUCE)  which was founded because of her initiative.

It was a festive event, accompanied by Celli music performed by Gitta´s former students.

Congratulations, Gitta!

QR Codes at Grave Sites?

I recently learned from Phyllis Hickey, Operation Services Administrator, that the cemetery at which two of our Founders are buried use QR codes. With a smart phone and a QR Reader you can get information on the individual buried at the site.

Phyllis took a photo of the sign that displayed the QR code at Dr. Annie Webb Blanton's grave site in Austin. Wouldn't Dr. Blanton, who died in 1945, be amazed that we now use technology from the womb to the tomb!

Amazing Strategy!

As a result of the encouragement of Margaret Church of North Carolina, Dr. Sherry Willis, Alpha Nu Chapter President, sent a mass email to her chapter members. She included information about blogging and tweeting. Fantastic!

Dr. Willis said, "I joined Twitter this morning and have sent Alpha Nu members an invitation to join if you wish to do so."

That is a great way to connect and communicate!

Following her notification, she immediately communicated with her chapter president, "Would you mind sending something to our members encouraging them to read her blogs and follow her on Twitter?   I think they will enjoy reading and keeping up with what is going on in DKG."

Margaret, Thank You! Your email to Dr. Sherry Willis, Alpha Nu Chapter President, was music to my ears.

Blanche Delgado, San Antonio, Texas, shared the status of Zeta Beta's development of a DKG Girl Scout patch.  She and members of her chapter are now working with two Girl Scout troops.

Blanche shared, "The wheels are in motion with DKG International to present the 'first ever' DKG Girl Scout patch to these two troops.  Zeta Beta has reached another milestone in DKG.  We will impact the lives of many young ladies, as other chapters  join our venture with Girl Scouts throughout the world to empower women."

Blogs Valuable?

Blogs are valuable if they are read.

I would love for more DKG members to read my blogs. I try to keep them updated and share information that's important. So, what can I do?

One member suggested that I issue a challenge. So, here goes! The first, 25th, and 50th person who sends an email with an idea as to how to increase the readership of my blogs, or who shares  information that members would like to read in a blog, will receive a prize. Seriously!

In the subject line of your email, put Are Blogs Valuable? In the body of the email share your idea for increasing readership or indicate information you think should be shared in a blog. Provide your name and state organization and I will let you know if you are the first, 10th, 25th or 40th person to submit. If so, a prize will be mailed to you.

It's that simple. Ready - Set - Go! Send your email to bevhelms@embarqmail.com

Pride in DC

Anita Walls with Dr. Beverly Helms
at  NE  Regional Conference
in Portland, Maine
Anita Walls, state organization president of the District of Columbia, shared the following as reasons she is proud of her state organization.

The State Organization is working together to create a more harmonious unit.  We are re-building the organization and collectively growing as a team.  This year, our strategic action plan includes increasing membership, revised bylaws, technology integration and active participation in DKG International Conferences, CTAUN and US Forum.

I am pleased that we have made great strides in these areas during 2013-2014. Chapter Presidents are very informed, energetic and sincere about strengthening the Society.

Benefits of Membership

There are many benefits of belonging to The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. One that stands out is the opportunity to apply for and receive an international scholarship for graduate study.

During its meeting, February 21-22, 2014, the International Scholarship Committee awarded  17 scholarships, four for members working on a Masters' Degree and 13 pursuing a Doctorate.

A total of $154,000 was awarded this year for a total of $430,000 for the biennium!

What's with New Brunswick?

Joan Somerville, state organization president of New Brunswick, shared the following with me as an update on the status of the New Brunswick State Organization.

Beta Chapter completed its Wuliwon Reading Project (DKG Educational Foundation funding) with a local elementary school.

Gamma Chapter hosted a Celebration Tea to observe its 30th birthday. Approximately fifty women educators attended and were treated to a delicious lunch. An informative  presentation about DKG and its influence internationally was shared.

Former Gamma members, and other educators who were invited to attend,  received an orientation and  reorientation to the benefits of belonging to DKG. Gamma’s display of thirty years of archives, scrapbooks and current projects gave guests an insight into the organization and allowed active members an excellent opportunity to reflect on just how much return they receive on their investment in DKG.

According to Gamma Chapter President, Nancy Jonah, plans are to initiate six new members.
